Conservatives often ask why so many Republicans go native when they get to Washington, D.C. The answer is: Because you don't defend them when they come under relentless attacks from liberal hatchet men.

Lewis Libby did what you wanted. He didn't place secret phone calls to reporters revealing classified intelligence programs. He supported the war on Islamic fascists. He didn't try to raise your taxes like James Baker III. And he has loyally served Dick Cheney, the man conservatives secretly wish were president.

And now he's on trial for — at worst — misremembering who first told him that future reality show contestant Joseph Wilson was sent on a boondoggle to Niger by his wife, Valerie Plame.

The way Libby remembered it, NBC's Tim Russert was the first one to tell him. But the way Russert remembers it, he didn't tell Libby about Wilson's wife. (And the way Wilson remembers it, he was sent to Niger by Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise.)

Try this: Who told you Wilson was sent to Niger by his wife? Who told you a bipartisan Senate panel concluded that Joe Wilson was lying when he denied that his wife had sent him to Niger? While we're at it, who was the first person to correct you on your pronunciation of "Niger"?

I don't remember, either — and I'm not running a war.

The exact same people who are now demanding prison for Libby for not remembering who told him about Plame are the ones who told us it was perfectly plausible for Bill Clinton to forget that Monica Lewinsky repeatedly performed oral sex on him in the Oval Office. Even if chubby Jewish brunettes aren't your type, be honest: Which of the two events would stand out more in your memory?

Perjury is intentionally swearing to something you know to be untrue — not misremembering what later appears, on balance, not to be the truth.

Here are some simple illustrations. If Clinton had been asked how many sexual encounters it took for him to remember Monica's name (six) and he got the answer wrong, it would not be perjury since, like Monica's name, it's an easy thing to forget.

If Clinton had been asked whether he talked to Rep. Jim Chapman and then to Rep. John Tanner, or to Rep. Tanner and then to Rep. Chapman while Monica was performing oral sex on him in the Oval Office and he got the answer wrong, that would not be perjury because it's not relevant to the investigation. (Correct answer: Chapman, then Tanner.)

But when Clinton was asked under oath — in a case brought by Paula Jones under the law liberals consider more sacrosanct than any passed in the 20th century, Section 1983 of the Civil Rights Act: "Mr. President ... at any time were you and Monica Lewinsky alone together in the Oval Office?" and he answered, "I don't recall," that was perjury.

Now take the question: "Who first told you fantasist Wilson was sent to Niger by his wife?" Unless it actually was Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise — the answer to that question is not going to be perjurious. No matter how many witnesses swear they told Libby first, if Libby honestly believed it was Russert, he didn't commit perjury.

So why is there a trial? Because there is no penalty for using the threat of imprisonment as a political weapon against conservatives. Ask Tom DeLay or Rush Limbaugh.

If Libby were a Democrat, we would know the sexual proclivities of everyone in Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's office, Judith Miller would be portrayed as a "stalker," Tim Russert's cat would be dead, and the public would know about every toupee at MSNBC.

Republicans don't have to kill cats to bestir themselves to defend their own from rank partisan persecution. But it never happens.

People who attack conservatives never have to worry about their own dirty laundry coming out. All they have to worry about is whether People magazine will use a good picture of them in its "Sexiest Man Alive" issue.

When Secret Service officers innocently told Monica she couldn't see Clinton because Eleanor Mondale was "visiting" the president, Bill Clinton immediately threatened to fire the officers responsible. (They say Clinton was so mad it took him an extra couple of minutes to "finish off" in the sink.)

Compare that to how the Bush administration treats an employee caught actually violating a citizen's rights. An officer with Bush's own customs office held Rush Limbaugh for three hours at a private airport, mauling his belongings and calling in his Viagra prescription to the media before he had left the airport. We don't even know her name.

No one has bothered to investigate what prescriptions she takes or whether she has any angry relatives willing to badmouth her. She certainly has not been fired for this egregious violation of an American citizen's rights. No worries — it was just a conservative.

You want to protect the borders, cut taxes, fight Islamic fascists and put up Ten Commandments monuments? Get her name. Find out about Patrick Fitzgerald what we'd know if he were Ken Starr. If you won't defend your own champions, conservatives, then don't sit back and wonder why so few people want to be your champions.

Conservative Politician "Spartans" are few, far and silent. Their silence cows others. Most Conservative politicians are more like geldings than stallions in a pasture filled with Liberal mares "in heat", ie. they think they remember they should do something but don't have the balls to do anything therefore getting the "blank" kicked out of themselves. It almost seems like conservative men are more neutered than liberal men. They are afraid to appear aggressive and make the "liberal news at 11"! Wake up conservatives! Be as vicious as liberals or perish!

Yup...the pussy liberals can lie with impunity...even under oath...and can actually act enrage when periodically called out by a conservative. But let a conservative even fart, and they are worse than a Vermont child-molester. It is insanity that has been allowed by too many quivering purse-dog Republicans. The pussy liberals know that if they say the lie often enough, the lemmings of America will believe it, and then as far as they are concerned...it now becomes the truth. Lewis Libby is being allowed to be thrown to the wolves because the RINOs, having no balls of their own, won't do anything about it. Even GW gave his balls up and is just another RINO. Ann...we need true patriots like you to BE the leaders instead of commenting on the leaders. Newt Gingrich is the only true conservative that is talking about running. I don't know about some of the others...which means they don't stand a chance. This is the America of American Idol and Survivor...and unless you have name recognition...it's going to be that much harder. Ann, you are one of the few true conservatives who will stand up to the lies of the pussy-liberals...and that is why they hate you. They hate the truth and they will do ANYTHING to try and hide the truth. Bill Clinton was just another pussy-liberal liar who got away with pretty much anything. Whitewater, Paula Jones, Jennifer Flowers, Monica Lewinski, secrets to the Chinese, etc. If he was a Republican, he would be reviled like the pussy-liberals revile Richard Nixon and George Bush. Instead, because he's a pussy-liberal...he is revered and held up as sacred. Unbelievable...but true.

We have a rare president that is trustworthy, competent and courageous in doing what is best for the country. The destructive actions of the liberals can be expected from people that work for the father of all lies. What doesn't make sense is conservatives that nit-pic and undermine President Bush's work. So what if some of his policies don't jive with an idividual's world view. Give him an unqualified carte blanche and watch the liberals collapse.

Ann and the astute comments following pretty much sum up the quasi-conservative position. Ann’s remark about “going native” is accurate as long as she is referring to a politician regressing to his natural state, that being not a true conservative. (Hmmmm… I wonder what Joe Biden’s thoughts are about Bananfana Bo-banna Barack Obama going native might be.)

Perhaps it is due to the fact that there are so few true conservatives.

And there will be fewer still if those who claim to be do not enhance their gonadature.

When faced with an issue natural reaction is fight or flight. Too many quasi-conservatives opt for Plan B. Those who tough it out either are wildly successful despite the attempts of their opposites or fall apart like a cheap suit.

Ronald Reagan is the prime example of someone who stuck to his guns, made his policy, articulated it and cared not a whit about public opinion.

Then, there is John McCain.

Newt Gingrich may be a good candidate but as he is waiting until September to decide to run, something tells me that he might. Yet, poor Newt, as great a man, and dare I say conservative, that he is, comes with a full set of Louis Vitton baggage.

Others, such as Rick Santorum, could be a great candidate, yet he was not reelected in his own state. Sam Brownback, John Cox et al are also great conservatives but how long before the “proto-cypto-conservatives” out them in some way.

The Rudy Giuiliani’s of the world are hailed as a hero when he is at least as far to the left on many issues as is Her Thighness.

Ann is right, as always. The Right lets the Left, MSM, activist judges and others take our lunch money and give us wedgies in front of the cute girls. The Left, MSM, activist judges and more can say, do, deign, prevaricate, obfuscate all that they want and we let them do it.

We deserve what we get if we do not stand up for what we believe.

How does that old line go: “We must hang together, gentlemen, else, we shall most assuredly hang separately.”

If we let the Left pick us off one by one, if we let the charges and the lies of the left go unchallenged, if we do not field and support with a converts zeal a candidate that represents true conservatism, then, my dear friends, we deserve what we get.

God Bless, God Speed, God Help Us All
John

The Republicans are COWARDS and that is why their base is leaving the party.

Dear Ann,

If I live the next 100 years without hearing a reference to Clinton's penis or Rush's need for Viagra, it will not be long enough to suit me.

As for Mr. Libby, he will be tried by a jury of his peers, and either acquitted or convicted. That's our system. No amount of 'defending' him can, or should, be permitted to interfere with that process.

We are a country of laws, and must conduct ourselves within those laws or pay the penalty.

The way things are going today, Mr. Libby is lucky to even be receiving a trial (we were for habeas corpus before we were against it).

In any event, one must have faith that justice will be served.

If not in this lifetime, than certainly in the next.

ps-Tim Russert looks like a dog person to me :)

Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off at this one! Woefully true but hilarious, Ann!

The problem with conservatives “going native” when they get to Washington, D.C. is radically more complex than “If you won't defend your own champions, conservatives, then don't sit back and wonder why so few people want to be your champions.”

Liberals “own” Hollywood and liberal themes dominate the movie industry and television shows.

Liberals “own” the public television stations and the news staff (I refuse to call them reporters as they don’t report – they recite).

Liberals “own” newspapers and magazines.

Liberals “own” our public education system, and teachers, and the teachers union.

Liberals “own” our courts, and our judges, and write laws from the bench.

Conservatives have made inroads with Fox News and the internet, but those pale in comparison to what liberals “own”.

Where liberals will “go to the mattresses” to protect and defend any and all liberal Democrat sleaze-balls, sexual perverts and addicts, criminals, liars, and two-faced rat bastards (hope I didn’t miss any), conservatives will not do the same. We toss our garbage (notice I didn’t say recycle).

Liberal Democrats stampede to the microphones every chance they get, like sharks to the scent of blood, for the opportunity to throw any and all conservative Republicans into the feeding frenzy like chum. And, their co-conspirators in the mainstream media are more than willing to cater the event with balloons, confetti and all the trimmings.

A major problem is getting the truth known – the truth about liberal Democrats AND the truth about conservative Republicans.

If the truth of liberal Democrats and their agenda were finally exposed, their slimy, flip-flopping, lying, two-faced, nanny-state, tax raising, terrorist sympathizing tactics would place liberal Democrats number one on the endangered species list.

This is an old, sad story. Democrats are no-holds-barred fighters who will break any and all of the rules to destroy their opponents....they savage to their own every time campaign season rolls around, never mind what they do to Republicans every day of the week.
You are absolutely correct, Ann. Conservatives have no bitching rights because they have no spines.

On the surface, kevind makes a lot of sense, particularly with respect to Clinton and Limbaugh. In fact almost all of what he says is accurate.

Yet, I do feel the need to comment. The three middle statements regarding a trial, laws and “defending” him would be fair and accurate if taken out of context. But as Fitzgerald has made this a witch-hunt, Libby is deserving of all the equal time he can get.

Wilson is a known prevaricator and fabulist, the Left have a chronic case of HBS (Hate Bush Syndrome) so severe that it has affected all of their senses and our friends in the LSM have already tried, convicted and passed judgment on Libby, thoughts of habeas corpus notwithstanding.

Would Libby had been tried on the evidence that is widely disseminated, one would be forgiven for coming to the conclusions that the Left would have you believe. In a court of law, however, it would be considered leading the witness.

Much of what Fitzgerald has offered as proof has already been refuted and in some cases recanted by the prosecutor himself.

I say let the wheels of justice roll, let him have his day in court and let those with an agenda let Justice do her job. If they insist on prosecuting him, or anyone for that matter, in the court of public opinion without the benefit of cross-examination or calling witnesses it is our right, nay, our duty, to employ every tool we have to counter the unproven allegations.

God Bless and God Speed
John

You left me feeling embarrassed that I haven't done more to help Mr. Libby. Thank you, Ann.

Wonder if the higher-ups at the State Dept will be called upon - under oath! - to disclose that they all knew it was Armitage long before Fitzgerald decided to "get" Libby. A witch hunt, indeed. I hope if the "jury of his peers" (joke joke joke) decides he's guilty, that President Bush will immediately pardon him. That is the only fair disposition to this case. With politics ruling the day, an unbiased jury is hard to imagine. My opinion of Colin Powell has really taken a nosedive since he KNEW and didn't inform the president...wayyyyyy out of line!

This (U.S. Attorney) Patrick Fitzgerald is the same public nuisance that's pro/persecuting Conrad Black. And re tinylady's comment, like I always say: Democrats are shameless; Republicans are gutless. (Or, put another way: 'liberals' are evil; 'conservatives' are stupid.)
