It's Hard Out Here For A Pump

By: Ann Coulter

I would be more interested in what the Democrats had to say about high gas prices if these were not the same people who refused to let us drill for oil in Alaska, imposed massive restrictions on building new refineries, and who shut down the development of nuclear power in this country decades ago.

But it's too much having to watch Democrats wail about the awful calamity to poor working families of having to pay high gas prices.

Imposing punitive taxation on gasoline to force people to ride bicycles has been one of the left's main policy goals for years.

For decades Democrats have been trying to raise the price of gasoline so that the working class will stop their infernal car-driving and start riding on buses where they belong, while liberals ride in Gulfstream jets.

The last time the Democrats controlled the House, the Senate and the presidency was in 1993. Immediately after trying to put gays in the military and socialize all health care, Clinton's next order of business was to propose an energy tax on all fuels, including a 26-cent tax on gas. I think the bill was called "putting people first in line at the bus station."

Al Gore defended the gas tax, vowing that it was "absolutely not coming out" of the energy bill regardless of "how much trouble it causes the entire package." The important thing was to force Americans to stop their infernal car-driving, no matter how much it cost.

And mind you, this was before we knew Gore was clinically insane. Back then we thought he was just a double-talking stuffed shirt who seemed kind of gay.

Democrats in Congress promptly introduced an "energy bill" that would put an additional 25-cent-a-gallon tax on gasoline to stop "global warming," an atmospheric phenomenon supposedly aggravated by frivolous human activities such as commerce, travel and food production. This is the Democratic Party. That's their program.

Democratic House Speaker Tom Foley endorsed the proposal on "Charlie Rose," saying: "I'd have a five-cent increase every year for five years. ... But that's not going to happen ... because we've got people who fret and worry that one- or two-tenths of a cent of a gasoline tax is going to cause some revolution at home." So in Tom Foley's universe, two-tenths of a cent is the same as a quarter — another testimonial to the American public educational system.

The Democrats' proposed gas tax did cause a revolution at home, and consequently the Democrats were able to sneak through only an additional 4.3-cent federal tax on gasoline. After tut-tutting the idea that voters would object if the Democrats attempted a huge gas tax increase, Speaker Tom Foley soon became former speaker, and indeed former Congressman Tom Foley.

Gary Hart, another whimsical demonstration of what Democrats think a president should be like, said at the time, "I certainly favor consumption taxes, particularly on energy." Then there's John Kerry, who favored a 50-cent increase in the gas tax in 1994. If he were a rap artist, Kerry's stage name would be "Fifty Cent a Gallon."

Last year, a couple of green "climatologists" at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign were back at it in the journal Science, wheeling out their proposal for a 25-cent-a-gallon tax on gasoline as an "insurance policy" against global warming.

Just two months ago, we were being confidently told — on the basis of a New York Times/CBS News poll, so it must be true — that "Americans might OK a gasoline tax hike if it reduced global warming or lessened U.S. dependence on foreign oil." (This poll was wedged in among the 29 polls claiming Americans think we're losing the war in Iraq.) Other results from the Times' "meaningless polls" section: Americans might "OK" a Dennis Kucinich presidency if it meant free ice cream every Tuesday.

How many times do Democrats have to tell us they want to raise the price of gas for the average American before the average American believes them? Is it more or less than the number of times Democrats tell us they want to surrender in the war on terrorism?

It's as if a switch goes off in people's brains telling them: The Democrats can't be saying they want to destroy the lives of people who drive cars because my father was a Democrat, and the Democrats can't be this stupid!

The Democrats' only objection to current gas prices is that the federal government's cut is a mere 18.4 cents a gallon. States like New York get another 44 cents per gallon in taxes. The Democratic brain processes the fact that "big oil companies" get nearly 9 cents a gallon and thinks: WE SHOULD HAVE ALL THAT MONEY!

When the free market does the exact thing liberals have been itching to do through taxation, they pretend to be appalled by high gas prices, hoping the public will forget that high gas prices are part of their agenda.

Ann, Great column. Gore is a clown and and on the fringe of mental illness that all liberals suffer, screaming the sky is falling. His global warming mantra is absurd and even Professor Linson from MIT.and other scientists indicate that the sun itself is warming and human impact is minimal at best.Al Gore has no other platform. He did nothing along with Clinton to deter terrorism while watching the sky possibly fall. He should have been looking for airplanes flying into buildings. Gore is a clown that does not make me laugh and scares the hell out of children.

Once again, a very fun column. Thanks, Ann!

As for Mr. Gore, he might not scare little children, as Verno suggests, but he sure ignores them. My son, all of nine years old when Mr. Gore stopped at a local diner for a photo op in 2000, was completely overlooked by Mr. Gore, though the little guy was the very first person to approach the VP. The whole time Gore mugged for the press corps out front, occasionally shaking hands with adults who looked like they mattered. My son eventually walked away dejectedly, not once acknowledged by the then-second most powerful man on the planet.

Curiously, I was asked by a Gore press-handler to move from the background (I held my own camera, and I was off to the side) because I might "ruin the shot." To hell with the child before the great candidate: worry about the father with the camera who might make Gore actually look like he was merely visiting small-town America for illusion's sake.

It is all about smoke and mirrors, isn't it?

Peace!

Ann,

As always, well thought out, reasoned, provocative and, of course, right on the money

You mention “global warming” a number of times. I know that you employ that term only as a tool to show what tools the tools on the left are. Other than the “Birkenstockista’s” no one gets their hemp-woven panties in a knot over this bete-noire. I am not saying that there should be a wholesale rape and pillage of the environment but the “global warming” canard is nothing more than a liberal code word for “we do not like Republicans.”

I am really surprised that the liberals are not wholeheartedly embracing windmills. For openers, they are a source of “clean” energy and secondly, they are windmills and they do have these huge fan blades on them. One would be excused for thinking that if these fans of everestal proportions were placed off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Southampton, Malibu and so on that they might actually cool the “global warming.” Or, am I missing something? (Note to liberals: that is called “sarcasm.”)

Just as we all have that cousin or other family member that is less than savory and you really try to avoid him the family reunion, so too do each of us have one of our own elected officials about whom we feel the same. Our particular embarrassment is the shy and reclusive Sen. Chuck Schumer.

This paragon of pandering, idiocy and dearth of common sense was virtually tattooed to the TV screens last year when the gas prices rose. He was “demanding” that the President release the strategic oil reserves to mitigate the “immense” rise in gas prices at the pump. (Mind you, those prices were lower than they are today.) The good professor claimed that putting more fuel into the system would lower prices and he could take all the credit for reinventing the wheel. When called on how does he suggest replenishing the reserves, this swami of subterfuge glibly replied that they would simply buy more oil later when the prices were lower.

Huh?

If we employed his logic we would have emptied our fossil fuel coffers, be forced to buy fuel at today’s much higher prices to have saved a few bucks at the pump, thereby not only adding to the trade deficit but also increasing our reliance on foreign oil. (I hope that he would have thought that through at the time. Wait, who am I kidding? Libs never think anything through. Sorry.) Two of his other plans were to invent a time machine and go back and get oil at much, much lower prices and the other was for the “Little Rascals” to put on a show to raise revenue.

Why has no one called Schumer on this?

Last point for now, why is there such a great outcry with respect to the “windfall” profits that the oil companies are earning? Even the Lame Stream Media can not spin the numbers hard and fast enough to show that the government reaps more profits from oil than do the oil companies themselves. Of course, the oil companies only explore for the oil, extract it from the ground and/or secure the oil from other sources, transport it, refine it and deliver it. The government is saddled with the Herculean task of taxing the efforts of others.

Must stop, head will explode.

The only purpose for taxes should be to raise money to support approved government operations. This is another example where government wants to use the tax system to control what the public does. If they really want to exert that control they should have the courage enact a low that specifically gives that control. However those laws would nevery pass or the sponsors would be voted out of office if they tried. So they hide control issues in the tax system as punitive taxes or tax benefits.

Jak: I'm glad you stopped before your head exploded. The government in a sacificial display of altuism even now has undertaken the arduous job of expanding the pool of potential tax collections by lax enforcement of immigration laws which may increase their future taxing efforts exponentially, such dedication to duty is indeed commendable. Warning to all contributors, if your head must explode go to Moveon.org & sacrifice yourself there, perhaps your brain matter will increase the collective IQ there to positive integers. Though, it is impossible to guarantee you any virgins for your martyrdom.

Queen Ann (She who must be obeyed - and thankfully so) has yet again proved that one small woman telling the truth can completely level a field of lying, back-stabbing, self-aggrandizing, pompous, blowhard political hacks, and retarded media lackeys.

Why do these serial, drive by prevaricators even bother to crawl out of their lairs? The answer is found in liberal control of most mass media outlets. Remember, half of all Americans are below average (this is a definition thing.) The vast majority of welfare recipients and programmable democratic voters are in this bloc and never, and I do mean never, double source a story. Well, in fact their media sources don't so why should they. Therefore these people are easily mislead and are subject to the "Big Lie" method of political discourse. This is, of course, where the liars just say anything and their partners in the media repeat it endlessly as if it were creditable. "George Bush is in it with the oil men and hates you little guys", never mind the facts of the democrats stonewalling any efforts to fix the problems with an energy bill. I am starting to feel like Jaksavin and must stop or my head will explode, followed by my heart and everything else. I just hate what these midgets are doing to our Country. Please vote this and every year. Don't be led off into 3rd. party dreams, stay in the real world where we live day by day. These lefty's MUST go or we will die. Sooner or sooner.
Be well, do good work and pray every day.

It's all a scam ... tax us to death on cigarettes and gas. The 'Save the Planet' rhetoric is just a justification while they give Red China and India a free pass to pollute like crazy.

What we have here is a bunch of degenerate, limp wrists who want to rule America as elites, who want to be above the Law, and who want to live behind a wall of cops protecting their right to be degenerates ... and who are absolutely terrified of Real America.

This gas thing has really PO'd Real America. No one has forgotten what the Dims did to our energy infrastructure ... So, yeah, they'd better be scared ... Real America is taking this very, very, very personally.

It is a happy time for me to visit this site and see like-thinking people; glad we are all on the same page.

“Thinker” makes a rather large leap of faith and credits the left to muchly when he avers that the left-lings “never…double source a story. This presumes that it was either a) sourced at least once or b) had a degree of truth that could be verified.

To quote herself who quotes liberals as saying “as we all know”, the leftmedia is rarely bothered by “facts” when there is an opportunity to create any sort of mistrust with respect to the current administration. Any tear in the fabric will be rent to expose a greater flaw even if they have to invent said flaw. ‘Tis easier to accuse than defend.

My head, thenk yew veddy much for caring, is once again below Chernobyl levels. However, ESQ makes a very valid point. If you want to see what the reporting of the events of the day would look like without FCC oversight, take a big swig of Gentleman Jack, strap yourself into a chair and visit “MoveOn.Com.”

“The Onion” is closer to the truth than are the nice fellow travelers at “MoveOn.” (ASIDE: Perhaps they can operate under the aegis of Michael Moore and rename the group “MoreOn.Com.” Just a thought.) If reading just “ain’t your thang” and you want your sanity challenged and grip on reality loosened, check out AirAmerica. With the exception of the true hate mongers (such as Mike Molloy) and the garden variety of idiots, who are soooo far off-base that it is comical with their “observations”, as Al Franken and Jeaneanne Garofalo (who, oddly enough are the founders, sorta), you have conflicting, erroneous and just plain sad data being delivered to the Sub-800 SAT set.

Case: There is a show called the “Majority Report.” Yet, virtually every on-air “personality” refers to their side as the minority.” The chick in the morning is a lesbian (not making any judgments at this point,) who is incapable of reporting most any story without reference to gayness. Case: She thought a particular brain surgeon was the best ever because he/she was a transsexual. Hello? How is this relevant? It is relevant only in the fact that this is yet one more way they can further their liberal agenda with respect to deviant sexual activity. Repeat it ad nauseum until it is expected. Perhaps one of the funniest things you night hear on this argument for taking a second and third look at the Fairness Doctrine can be found on one of the adverts aired. The advert ends by advising that one “should keep one of these at all times in your backpack.”

BACKPACK? Who am I, a Boy Scout? Paul Bunyon?

I do not know about you but there is no reason in the world a grown person ought wear a backpack unless it is dictated by ones profession, such as Boy Scout or Paul Bunyan. What is next, tips for balding men how to care for their ponytails?

Sorry, I digress and the EEG is nearing “China Syndrome.”

But the subtle point is that it is all well and good to read great columns as this one, foray into the Lame Stream Media for sports and weather but to see what the left is really doing one needs to investigate such outlets as SkareAmerika and MoreOn.Com. These people not only take themselves seriously, think that they are right but they truly have a following. There are people, some of which I am reasonably certain that if they did not actually attend college, drove past one once, who sound lucid and coherent and actually believe the litany of lies force fed them as a result of their anger and mistrust.

If you want to go to the really scary website, I will first need to see some ID.

God Bless, God Speed and God Help Us.

The double-talking Dem's are not new and every year, people start to think they will eventually get it. They won't! They are STUPID!

I was in the front lines (so to speak) in the war on liberalism. I was a popular invader on the liberal blogs. They all loved to hate me, kinda' like me with kevind on here, except I bothered to make a point. The point now: I heard the libs whine "There's too much driving. There's too much fuel consumption. There's a hole in the ozone that nobody has seen! Wah! Stop driving, before you hit a butterfly. There aren't many left, ya' know?" While they are typing, they are letting the Orkin man in to kill ANY bugs and whatever else those chemicals will kill.

It doesn't matter! You see, they don't do anything wrong. No matter what. It is as simple as that. A candidate who supports their interests doesn't do anything wrong either. Type 1 Dem.

Type 2 is the blind semi-conservative who doesn't want to chase away loved ones by saying they are bad or their sister had an abortion, so they don't want to condemn her, etc..

Ola! That is how we say hello now in America now. Wake Up People! If they do wrong, they do wrong.

I could have been one of those people, who has a relationship with my pedaphile Daddy at the expense of my kids, because my poor Daddy was abused. Give me a F-ing break! Keep the immoral (family or not) away from your kids! Kick immoral family to the curb and find the chaos suddenly disappear from your life. Give them an open invitation to come back as soon as they have a clue, unless they are like my Father. Maybe then you won't have to loan them money and you can buy your gas without a quam.

That is one reason I respect Cheney, his daughter the lesbian. He still stands for principles.

My latest demand on Liberals ... get a job that produces energy, or shut up.
