We Like You! We Really, Really Like You!
Printer FriendlyBy: Ann Coulter
When Democratic Rep. John Murtha called for the withdrawal of American troops in the middle of the war, Republicans immediately leapt to action by calling Murtha a war hero, a patriot and a great American.
I haven't heard Republicans issue this many encomiums to one man since Ronald Reagan died. By now, Murtha has been transformed into the greatest warrior since Alexander the Great and is probably dating Jennifer Aniston.
In response to Murtha's demand for the "immediate withdrawal of American troops" – as the New York Times put it – President Bush called Murtha a "fine man, a good man" who served with "honor and distinction," who "is a strong supporter of the United States military." He said he knew Murtha's "decision to call for an immediate withdrawal of our troops ... was done in a careful and thoughtful way."
Vice President Dick Cheney called Murtha "a good man, a Marine, a patriot."
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Murtha is "a fine man, I know him personally ... and it's perfectly proper to have a debate over these things, and have a public debate."
National Security Adviser Steve Hadley called in his praise for Murtha from South Korea, saying Murtha was "a veteran, a veteran congressman and a great leader in the Congress."
During the House debate on Murtha's insane proposal to withdraw troops in the middle of the war, Rep. Henry Hyde, R-Ill., said Murtha deserved an "A-plus as a truly great American," and Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., said "none of us should think of questioning his motives or desires for American troops."
On the House floor, both Republicans and Democrats repeatedly gave Murtha rousing standing ovations. There was so much praise for Murtha that one of his Democratic colleagues asked him if he still had to attend Murtha's funeral.
What is this? Special Olympics for the Democrats? Can't Republicans disagree with a Democrat who demands that the U.S. surrender in the middle of a war without erecting monuments to him first? What would happen if a Democrat were to propose restoring Saddam Hussein to power? Is that Medal of Freedom territory?
I don't know what Republicans imagine they're getting out of all this love they keep throwing at Democrats. I've never heard a single liberal preface attacks on Oliver North with a recitation of North's magnificent service as a Marine. And unlike Murtha, who refuses to release his medical records showing he was entitled to his two Purple Hearts, we know what North did. (These Democrat military veterans are hardly shrinking violets when it comes to citing their medals, but they get awfully squeamish when pressed for details.)
We also know what Rep. Randy Cunningham, R-Calif., did to earn his medals. One of only two American Navy aces that the Vietnam War produced, Cunningham shot down five MiGs, three in one day, including a North Vietnamese pilot with 13 American kills. Cunningham never did something as insane as proposing that we withdraw troops in the middle of a war, but this week he did admit to taking bribes.
And yet, no Democrat breathed a word of Cunningham's unquestioned heroism before rushing to denounce him as "the latest example of the culture of corruption" – in the words of Rep. Nancy Pelosi.
Sen. Teddy Kennedy didn't issue a 20-minute soliloquy on what a wonderful man Judge Robert Bork was as a human being before attacking his judicial philosophy. Kennedy just laid into Bork like he was George Lincoln Rockwell.
Speaking of which, George Lincoln Rockwell, former head of the American Nazi Party, served in the military during World War II. Are we obligated to praise his war service before disputing his views?
CNN's Bill Schneider summarized the Republican love-fest for Murtha by saying that House Republicans "started calling him some very ugly names – cowardly, shameful, he wanted to cut and run, he wanted to surrender to the terrorists, emboldening the enemy." Are we all looking at the same "intelligence"?
The only Republican congressman who did not offer to have sex with John Murtha on the House floor was Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio. While debating Murtha's own proposal to withdraw American troops from Iraq in the middle of a war waged to depose a monstrous dictator who posed a threat to American national security, Schmidt made the indisputably true remark that Marines don't cut and run. (She was right! Murtha voted against his own proposal.)
Schmidt's precise words were: "I received a call from Col. Danny Bubp. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message, that cowards cut and run, Marines never do." Bubp later said – pointlessly – that he was not calling Murtha a coward. Neither was Jean Schmidt. (These guys are very brave facing down the VC, but cower before the MSM.)
Now Schmidt is Emmanuel Goldstein, subjected to the liberals' Orwellian two-minutes hate, and not one Republican will defend her. If Republicans were one-tenth as rough with the congressman who wants to withdraw troops in the middle of a war as they are on a congresswoman who calls it cowardly to withdraw troops in the middle of a war, we might have a functioning Republican Party.

Ann, Jean Schmidt Rep. Ohio had more "balls" than her Republican compatriots. Men have to be men! I am a Vietnam Vet. and I support the soldiers who send me e-mails everyday. They are my heroes, my sons, my family. We need to get control of our beliefs, please! vern p.s. Ann, I love what you do for us!

When are the Republicans going to lead how to lead? We smile and extend the hand of friendship, and the liberals just see us as weak. Let's listen to Ann and give it back to the liberals like they give it to us.

Anne, you are dead on target with this column. Republicans seem to be AWOL when it comes to any kind of cohesive strategy or response. Meanwhile the Democrats conspire to undermine the elected administration by lining up in rotation to feed a complicit press the phony charge of the day. What good is a majority if they lack the will to implement the type of government they were elected to provide, and cede the field to a hysterical minority? Kudo's to Schmidt for her statement on Murtha. Serving in Vietnam is now considered honorable but it doesn't confer any IQ points on Murtha.

Ann, you are the best. Sadly, our party leaders aren't. What ever happened to the Truth (capital "T" intentional)? Why have we become the party of apathetic apologists? OK, so Murtha was a war hero. I appreciate that, but he is wrong on this. Why not say so? OK, so Cunningham was a war ace. I appreciate that, but he deserves to rot in a jail cell--he callously violated the public trust and power he was given. There are no free passes: absolute power demands absolute accountability. If they are wrong, say so (and you do that so well...). If they are crooks, I say: hang the bastards. I wonder: in politics is it ever possible to have open and honest discourse?

Ann,
I agree that the Republican love fest for Murtha was a tad excessive. However, it did show some degree of class for the GOP when contrasted with the vile comments and vicious personal attacks that are the standard for their Democratic counterparts. Unfortunately, any points earned by their restraint were forfeited by their spineless desertion of their colleague, Jean Schmidt, who told it like it is.

I was glad to see you take on Congressman Murtha and why he deserved derision from the Republicans. His news conference was like the rantings of an old man, who in spite of his so called expertese had no real plan or understanding of overall strategy. His amnesia regarding what happen in Afganistan after the Soviet defeat was a glaring oversite. He displayed a compleat lack of understanding of the long term stategy and resolve necessary to secure Iraq and move the middle east forward to a "new birth of freedom" from it`s own self induced retardation. Murtha proved himself to be another Congressional example of a why we got rid of the "Articles of Confederation" and established the President as the chief foreign policy maker and Commander in Chief in war.

I didn't know that surrendering to the enemy instead of dying for your country automatically made one a hero.

Ann;
You are absolutely hilarious. It is so funny watching you drive these LIBs absolutely NUTs. Colmes especially.
Somehow during this exchange it was posed as "unwise" or "inappropriate" politically for Repub's to chastise or even attempt to impugn the character or integrity of John Murtha.
CUT and RUN RETREAT is all Murtha remembers of Vietnam. He's used his vietnam military experience and resume to propagate his Democrat political career for more than 30+ years. It's served him so well why stop using it now.
Murtha should be exposed for his "shell shocked" perpetual fraud on the American public.
Although the Republicans have allowed their true screed (rudderless, spineless and weak) to be super exposed by this outrageous liberal rhetoric I believe the 403-3 vote in the house record will serve to HAUNT the Dems for both 2006 and 2008 in and by itself.
John Kerrys statements on Wednesday 11/30/05 referring to "success" & "winning" in IRAQ is all the Democrats have ever proposed in reference to the "withdraw immediately" platform is side splitting hysterical.
I would like to SEE Ann, Michelle and Tammy on the same evening. You three on the same stage would be a big bucks ticket sellout, I'll guarantee you that.
Could call it something like "Howitzers for Hollywood", an evening of Beautiful Bitches with Brains.
Ann you're beautiful, intelligent and highly talented entertainer. Very intoxicating individual. Keep up the great work.

Despite the daily claims by the Democrats that they support the troops their actions demonstrate the contrary. They have shown on a continuing basis that they are ready to sacrifice two thousand dead and 15,000 wounded U. S. military personnel in Iraq on the altar of their own political gain. In their unbridled hatred of George W. Bush and their fanatical desire to see him destroyed they are willing, no, demanding that we immediately run from our obligations in Iraq and turn the country over to the terrorists. Just so they can say that George Bush lost Iraq.
As part of this campaign to assure the defeat of the United States the Democrats, aided and abetted by the liberal print and television media, put forth the claim that since Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania is a Vietnam war hero with two purple hearts and a Bronze Star who demands instant pullout and retreat from Iraq he somehow has special insight and status in this debate. According to the unholy alliance we should all bow to his views of the war and immediately surrender and don‘t you ever forget that he is a decorated war hero so he must be right.
But how many of the press have publicized the speech given on the floor of Congress on the Friday before Thanksgiving by another member of Congress, Sam Johnson of Texas. Here is a congressman who firmly believes that we are doing the right thing in Iraq and that leaving now before the war is won will have immediate and long term negative consequences for the military and this country. He wholeheartedly supports what we are doing in Iraq and has some cogent reasons for his position. For some strange reason the liberal media do not convey his words to the country.
Well, who is this Sam Johnson anyway that he should be given any consideration by the press and television media or that his views should carry any weight. How can he possibly compare with the insightful Vietnam hero John Murtha and why should anyone pay attention to this old Texas congressman.
Actually he is Colonel Sam Johnson, U.S Air Force retired. He flew 62 combat missions in the Korean war. He flew 25 missions in the Vietnam war before being shot down in North Vietnam in 1966. He was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for seven and a half years, half of that time in solitary confinement.. He earned two Silver Stars; two Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross; one Bronze star with V for valor; four Air Medals; three Outstanding Unit Awards and two Purple Hearts.
By their continuing silence regarding Sam Johnson and lionizing of Rep. Murtha could the media possibly be demonstrating their biased support for the Democrat white flag strategy for conducting this war on terror?
For those who may be interested in hearing both sides of this debate let me suggest that you go to www.samjohnson.house.gov on the internet to view Rep. Johnson's speech.

Ann,
It appears feminization worked only for the Republicans. Ronald Reagan laughed and made jokes about the dems. Maybe Republicans could try taking the dems less seriousily. After all, they are an intellectual vacuum.

I love you Ann. You are one of the few that speaks truth. Republicans have lost their balls. After FIVE years of doing NOTHING, Bush decides to MAYBE, start enforcing the immigration laws. I won't hold my breath. As for the HERO Penn. congressman, good thing he wasen't around during WWII. He would have gone to Walter Reed Hospital, saw the wounded and called for surrender to Hitler. He voted for the war, didn't he know as a Marine that in wars people get killed and injured? I listened to him on C-span and I swear he suffers from dementia.

Once again, Ann has hit one out of the park! I'm am so disappointed with and angry at our Republican majority who don't understand that the Democrats will NEVER like them - they are too egotistical AND hateful to do that. Both my Senators (DeWine and Voinovich) have heard as much from me repeatedly for many months. However, the DEM bullies still DO respect force - so use it already! Memo to Bill Frist - if you don't have the stones to lead then turn the job over to someone who does!

Republicans are gutless on this issue. Schimdt was the only forcefull voice who called it like it is on the Murtha diversionary pre-orchestrated action. Murtha and the comlibs are simiply stating an agenda of winding down the war that will happen eventually, on the Bush Administration's timetable. Murtha' combat record has nothing to do with his politics, yet the comlib Dem's have successfully combined military service and Republican oppostition as character assassination and anti-patriot.

We should make Jean Schmidt an honorary man because she has more of what it takes to be a man than the "men" of the GOP.
If Murtha and the Democrats are offended by Col. Bubp's comments, it is because he is right and they know that they are cowards.

When Traitor Murtha said today that our troops were "Broken" he showed his true colors. He is a triator and deserves nothing better than a hangman's noose. At worst he deserves some "alone time" with Zarkowi and his ilk.

You NAILED it Ann -- by the way, we have a "saying" down here in the South when "it" starts to really pile up --"Isn't that nice!" So, regarding all the Republican Murtha schmoozers, "Isn't that nice!". I think Republicans need to be careful not to upset their pundits with brains by making flowery statements that are false -- it makes them sound like the Clintonistas!!! I don't want a President -- or any representative who doesn't at least "appear" to have some integrity. What's Bush afraid of, he'll get cornered on the playground???? Ann, I think YOU should run for President!!!!

Great as always Ann. I would like to know one thing though. How many people, in the U.S, have died by violence during the same time the war in Iraq has been going on? How many people in Boxers/Pelosi state have been murdered during the last two and a halve years? Any bets that more people in the U.S. have died. Don’t hear any stories on that.

Ann,
I'm still waiting for your answer. I'll divorce my wife if you'll marry me. Yes? You certainly are the "Blond babe with the BIG brain".
But seriously, keep up the good work. ...and yes, the Republicans are WAY too nice to the "other side".

Thank you Ann for saying it for us all. I am courious to hear what you have to say about Murtha's speech in PA where he reportedly stated that our troops are worn out and living hand to mouth. Some are calling this treason and I would be pressed to agree. It angers me because it emboldens our enemies and causes them to see us as weak. This would never have happened in my Mother's day. Where is the outrage? How do these people get away with this stuff? I cannot believe Pennsylvania, blue or not, agrees with him.
