Alito Nominated, Democrats Hide From Base
Printer FriendlyBy: Ann Coulter
What a difference a week makes! Last week, liberals were expecting big things. They were counting on special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald and the White House to do their work for them.
On Friday, Fitzgerald was supposed to indict Karl Rove. Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld were going to be named unindicted co-conspirators. Maybe Condoleezza Rice, too. Who knew – maybe even Clarence Thomas. There was even talk of a posthumous indictment for Nixon.
It was going to be Fitzmas Day! (Which is much like Christmas except instead of having her baby in a manger, the woman has a late-term abortion.) Oh, it was hard to fall asleep on Fitzmas Eve!
But Friday came, and only Irve Lewis Libby was accused of committing any crimes. They were all crimes like perjury and obstruction of justice, personal to Libby, unrelated to the administration.
Fitzmas sucked. Instead of GI Joe and Mr. Machine, all Democrats got was a lousy cardigan sweater.
With the Democrats still reeling from Friday's sad news, Bush gave them a right-hook by nominating the stunningly qualified Judge Sam Alito on Monday. (So I guess not all qualified candidates for the Supreme Court turned Bush down before he nominated Miers.)
Not only is Alito qualified, but he also does not consider membership in the Federalist Society comparable to joining the Klan. In other words, this was just the sort of judicial nominee that would have terrified the White House a month ago.
Judge Alito's dear 90-year-old mother – who evidently had not yet been briefed by White House political consultants to avoid stating positions popular with Americans – immediately said of her son, "Of course he's against abortion."
As a judge on the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, Alito voted to uphold a Pennsylvania statute passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the governor that required women to notify their husbands before getting an abortion. (This was later deemed an "undue burden" by liberals' favorite Supreme Court justice, Sandra Day O'Connor.)
There is no question about Alito's qualifications. Democrats can only oppose him for his record, which will alarm a narrow segment of lunatics commonly known as "the Democratic Party base."
Now that timid Republicans are forced to face their fears, it turns out that liberal America was always a paper tiger. Americans are not rising in anger at a judicial nominee who would uphold a state law requiring husbands to be notified of their wives' abortions.
The only people attacking Alito for his abortion ruling are the usual nuts – Planned Parenthood, NARAL, People for the American Way and senators from New York and California (or what CBS thinks of as "the American heartland").
So confident are the Democrats about the popularity of their stance on abortion that the day after Alito's nomination, Senate Democrats shut down the Senate so they wouldn't be forced to talk about Alito.
Minority Leader Harry Reid dramatically invoked an obscure Senate rule to close the Senate for two hours, putatively in order to rehash old arguments about the Iraq war in closed session. In other words, Reid demanded more transparency in government by shutting the doors, throwing out the public, dimming the lights, and turning off the TV cameras in the chambers of the U.S. Senate.
That night, the cable news shows were fixated on Reid's weird stunt – and Senate Democrats narrowly avoided having to talk about Alito's abortion ruling for one more day.
If this is not a coincidence, let's see how long it takes Harry Reid to go on television and state his position on a wife having to notify her husband before getting an abortion. Heck, I'd settle for seeing Harry Reid definitively adopt any position on legalized abortion.
The nuts are perplexed. Why aren't Senate Democrats screaming from rooftops: "This is a judge who would force women to tell their husbands before they have an abortion! Are you people listening?"
Maybe the Democrats aren't running from their base. Maybe they're trying to help NARAL by preventing anyone from finding out about their agenda. If only Democrats could get the American people to believe that a group with the words "abortion" and "rights" in its name is some kind of benevolent little charity that holds bake sales.
Believe me, you don't want the Democrats out there reminding the American people that it's a constitutional right to abort a baby five minutes before birth. I understand that People for the American Way thinks it is "the American way" for wives not to tell their husbands about an abortion. But that's because they need to get out more.
In a 2003 Gallup poll, 72 percent of respondents favored a law requiring the husband of a woman to be notified if she decides to have an abortion. To put it another way, only 28 percent of Americans hold the position that married men have absolutely no reproductive rights whatsoever (but a lot of responsibilities!).
Upward of 60 percent of self-described "liberals" and "Democrats" favored husbands being notified of their wives' abortions. This is consistent with polls going back a decade.
If these poll results don't sound right to you, try crossing Central Park sometime. You'll find another part of Manhattan that's not the Upper West Side. Or do something wild and visit Queens or Staten Island. You won't even have to leave New York City! See how normal people react to the idea of a woman being required to tell her husband that she's having an abortion.
In the past few years, the Democrats have had to run from big government, gun control, welfare, criminal rights and gay marriage. With the Alito nomination, it looks like the Democrats are going to have to renounce the NARAL ladies or prepare for another sad day after the 2006 elections.

As usual, Ann is right on the button!!

Well, Ann, glad to have you back and gladder still to have someone as well qualified as Sam Alito nominated for SCJ.
The apoplexy of the left is, indeed, a thing of beauty. Even the notoriously camera-shy Senator Chuck Schumer has actually made a rare public appearance. He amazingly was able to link Rosa Parks to this nomination but more amazingly he displayed his uncanny talent for differentiating between this nominee and the retiring Justice when he stated, "At first blush, Judge Alito does not appear to be a Sandra Day O'Connor."
What was the tip off, Chuck, the heels or the drop earrings?
This, my friends, it the type of senator who is entrusted with the power to vote on such serious matters as SCJ's!
The 28% of American's who think it is swell for the little woman to spend an afternoon killing her baby without telling the man to whom she pledged her love and honor and so forth is twice as high as the percentage of the swells who want no mention of "God" anywhere except on their money.
This only typifies the fear that the right has of the small but vocal minorities. We are being held hostage by the ACLU, PAW, NARAL, sundry atheists and folks of differing sexual practices. Their pipeline to the media allows their views to be aired without contradiction and delivered as Gospel.
I am of the opinion that the nomination of Judge Alito will do more to galvanize the right than any possible harm. As noted in the article the democrat "leadership" is now reduced to drastic measures to avoid the inevitable.
The curtain has been pulled, there is an elephant in the room and with hope the vast majority of American's are finally waking up to the fact that we are right. We are in power. We are no longer going to take at face value the proclamations, prejudices and diatribes of the likes of Schumer, Reid, Kennedy, Biden, Kerry, Clinton and the rest of the laundry list of unindicted co-conspirators known as democrat senators.
The battle has just begun and let it begin with Sam the Man!

Great commentary, as usual. I think it's time to fight the war on liberals along with the "other" terroists in this world. Let's take it to them on the Senate floor!!!

Totally agree with both previous posts. However, I wish I had the confidence to believe that our Republican senators will not fall back to their usual stance of timidness. I hope they will not act like a watch maker trying to place the tiniest micro screw into place, but more like an iron worker slaming a rivit into an iron beam. Over and done, forever!

"Planned Parenthood, NARAL, People for the American Way and senators from New York and California (or what CBS thinks of as "the American heartland").
At the risk of being politically incorrect which I certain don't give a $hit about, why it is that most of the the organizations mentioned above are headed up by Jews? Why do they vote 80-85% Democrat? Why do they seem to be leading the assault on the RR and the values held by the RR (which I am not a part of)and values held by mainstream Americans. Look at the list: Schumer, Boxer, Spector, Mailer and most of the Hollywood execs et al
Before some of you get your BVDs in a bunch, I do not think there is an organized conspiracy nor do I advocate discrimination solely based on groups. I DO resent one segment of the population that comprises about 2.5% of the US population, occupying positions of power far in excess of their numbers and using it to force their agenda on the rest of us. I think the vast majority of this group (with some laudable exceptions) are intolerant, bigots. How strange that this is the same accusation so casually throw at gentiles.
If no one else wants to say it I will.
I think that an overwhelming majority of Jews are actively using their positions of power in the judicial, legislative, media and business community to force their world view on the rest of us and I am sick of remaining silent about it while the bar keeps getting lower and lower for every fringe behavior. I do not advocate anti Semetism but I think people like Schumer need to be called what they are:intolerant, anti Christian bigots.

It seems that Ms. Coulter was right, and further, there are a lot of signif people who agree.
We forget that lawyering is a near a blood sport as you can get without shedding any: it can be tough on the ego.
We also forget that the whole effort started out with people addressing a competent audience, and actually having to persuade them with a command of the facts and logic. You win or lose based on that, and the right doesn't not necessarily prevail.
It sounds like judge Alito actually has that skill set.

I am glad that you are feeling better, Ann. So am I. Let's keep our fingers crossed on this one, too. This time it is for confirmation.
Let's get this straight: "In a 2003 Gallup poll, 72 percent of respondents favored a law requiring the husband of a woman to be notified if she decides to have an abortion." And "Upward of 60 percent of self-described "liberals" and "Democrats" favored husbands being notified of their wives' abortions. This is consistent with polls going back a decade." And the "People for the American Way" opposes this law? Another liberal misnomer.
Samoyed, I do not know what you have been smoking, but the anti-Jewish bias that you show is frightening. I would like to call you a bunch of names, but I cannot because I'm a prude (thanks, Ogden Nash) and a conservative philo-Semitic Christian. We use reason, not the fertilizer that you spew. Jewish persons are taught compassion by the same G-d who chose them to be the "head and not the tail." Misguided compassion made them liberals. They need to be educated on the compassion of conservatism. In other words, "Conservatism is the ONLY compassionate political ideology." (Thanks, RHLIII) Furthermore, the antagonism between Jews and Christians come as much from Christians as from Jews--you are a good example. Finally, you might try www.towardtradition.org and Dr. Laura Schlessinger as a couple of examples of Jewish persons/organizations that are not hostile to conservative Christian thought. Not all Jewish persons think alike.
If you persist in your views, just remember that one day each of us will stand before the G-d of the Jews and give an account of what we have done with our lives. At that time, you will have no doubt that the G-d of the Jews and the Messiah of the Jews (whom the Christians call "Jesus Christ") has never abandoned His people or His Covenant. You cannot receive the reward of the righteous if you hate anyone...especially G-d's chosen people.
